FUE graft extraction from the donor area at the back of the scalp

Methods, and how many clinics here offer each one

MethodClinicsHow grafts are takenDonor area afterwards
FUE5One small round punch removes single follicular units one at a timeSmall dot scars scattered across the donor area, with no line scar
Sapphire FUE1The clinic’s own name for FUE, where sapphire-tipped blades make the recipient cutsAs FUE
DHI0A clinic's own label for FUE, where an implanter pen places the graftsAs FUE
FUT4A strip of scalp is removed, then cut into units under a microscopeThe result is one linear scar, which hair above it usually hides
Robotic0FUE with a robot-guided punchAs FUE

After FUE, no linear scar remains at the donor site, and crusts usually clear by the 7–10 day mark (Front Med 2026 review). Across 820 cases that used advanced FUE, scalp harvest averaged 2,956 grafts (Chouhan 2019). Only local clinics whose own sites name the method are included in these counts.

Grafts used in published cases, listed by Norwood stage

The Norwood scale rates male hair loss, starting at I (none) and ending at VII (only a band remains along the back and sides). Two published series give the graft counts surgeons actually used. These numbers are not a quote for your scalp.

Your stage alone does not determine the graft count. In one study, after the bald area of two men graded Norwood 3V was measured, they needed 3,900 and 6,150 grafts (Pittella et al., 2024). A quote offered before anyone measures your scalp is based on guesswork.

Before booking, settle these five points

  1. Ask about each step: who makes the incisions, who takes the grafts, and who places them. Ask for the names first, then check each name with your state medical board, or run all state checks at once on DocInfo.
  2. Request a written plan that gives the graft count, target zones and price for that count.
  3. Ask the clinic to show you its own patients at 12 months, under the same light and angle. Results are visible for most people at six to nine months, while some appear at 12 (AAD).
  4. If growth is poor, ask whether a second session is included and how long that offer lasts.
  5. Price the whole first year, including travel and time off work along with the procedure, medicine and follow-up visits.
