FUE graft extraction from the donor area at the back of the scalp

Methods, and how many of the clinics here offer each one

MethodClinicsHow grafts are takenDonor area afterwards
FUE4One small round punch removes single follicular units at a timeThe donor area shows small dot scars spread across it, no line.
Sapphire FUE0The clinic’s own name for FUE using sapphire-tipped blades to make recipient cutsAs FUE
DHI0The clinic’s own name for FUE using an implanter pen to place graftsAs FUE
FUT5A scalp strip is removed, then cut into units under a microscopeUsually, hair above the single linear scar hides it
Robotic0FUE with a robot-guided punchAs FUE

With FUE, no linear donor scar is left, and by day 7–10 the crusts have usually cleared (Front Med 2026 review). For 820 advanced FUE cases, scalp harvest averaged 2,956 grafts per case (Chouhan 2019). These counts include local clinics that name the method on their own sites.

Norwood stages and the graft counts reported in published cases

On the Norwood scale, male hair loss runs from I (none) to VII (a band at the back and sides only). Surgeons used these graft counts in two published series, so they are not a quote for your scalp.

The stage by itself does not determine the number. In one study, two men rated Norwood 3V needed 3,900 and 6,150 grafts after their bald areas were measured (Pittella et al., 2024). Any quote given before your scalp is measured is only a guess.

Five details to settle before booking

  1. Find out who handles each step, including the incisions, graft removal, and placement. Ask for the names, then check each person through your state medical board or all states at once through DocInfo.
  2. Request a written plan that covers the graft count, target zones, and price for that count.
  3. Ask the clinic to show you how its own patients look at 12 months, using the same light and angle. Results appear for most people after six to nine months, while some appear at 12 (AAD).
  4. Ask how poor growth is handled, including whether a second session is included and how long that offer lasts.
  5. Work out what your first year will cost: the procedure, medicine, travel, follow-up visits and time off work.
