With FUE, the donor area has no linear scar. By day 7–10, crusts will usually have cleared (Front Med 2026 review). Across 820 advanced FUE cases, scalp harvest averaged 2,956 grafts for each case (Chouhan 2019). The counts cover only clinics on this list whose own site names the method.

On the Norwood scale, male hair loss is graded I (none) up to VII (just a band at the back and sides). Two published series provide the graft counts that surgeons actually used, rather than a quote for your scalp.

The Norwood stage alone does not determine the graft count. In one study, two men with Norwood 3V needed 3,900 and 6,150 grafts after their bald areas were measured (Pittella et al., 2024). Any quote given before your scalp is measured is only a guess.
Five points to settle before you book
- Ask who handles each step, including the incisions, graft removal and graft placement. First, get the names. Then look up each one in the public register of the national medical council.
- Ask for a written plan. It should state the graft count, the zones, and the price for that count.
- Ask the clinic to show its own patients at 12 months, under the same light and angle. Results show up for most people at six to nine months, while some take 12 (AAD).
- Find out what occurs when growth is poor, including whether a second session is included and how long that offer lasts.
- Calculate all first-year costs: time off work, travel, follow-up visits, medicine, and the procedure.
