FUE graft extraction from the donor area at the back of the scalp

Methods offered and clinic counts here

MethodClinicsHow grafts are takenDonor area afterwards
FUE7Each follicular unit is taken separately with a small, round punch. No line forms, only small dot scars across the donor area.
Sapphire FUE0The clinic’s own term for FUE with sapphire-tipped blades used for the recipient cutsAs FUE
DHI1The clinic’s own term for FUE, with an implanter pen used to place graftsAs FUE
FUT5A strip of scalp taken out and cut into units under a microscopeA single linear scar, usually covered by hair above it
Robotic0FUE with a robot-guided punchAs FUE

With FUE, the donor area has no linear scar. By day 7–10, crusts usually clear (Front Med 2026 review). Across 820 advanced FUE cases, scalp harvest averaged 2,956 grafts per case (Chouhan 2019). A clinic is counted when its own site names the method.

Published case graft numbers by Norwood stage

With the Norwood scale, male hair loss is graded from I (none) through VII (meaning only a band remains at the back and sides). Surgeons used these graft counts in two published series. They do not provide a quote for your scalp.

Source: 820 men at stage V–VII, Chouhan et al., J Cutan Aesthet Surg 2019, table 2.

Stage by itself does not decide the number. A study by Pittella et al., 2024 measured the bald areas of two men classified as Norwood 3V. Their needs were 3,900 and 6,150 grafts, so any quote before your scalp is measured is a guess.

Five points to confirm before booking

  1. Ask who handles each step: making the incisions, removing grafts and placing them. First get the names, then look up each one on the public register of the national medical council.
  2. Request a written plan that lists the graft count, treatment zones, and price for that graft count.
  3. Ask to see how the clinic’s own patients look at 12 months, using the same lighting and angle. Most people see results in six to nine months, and some see them at 12 (AAD).
  4. Clarify the terms for poor growth, including whether a second session is covered and until when.
  5. Price out the whole of year one: time off work, travel, the procedure, medicine, follow-up visits.
