Methods, and how many clinics here offer each
| Method | Clinics | How grafts are taken | Donor area afterwards |
|---|---|---|---|
| FUE | 13 | Each follicular unit is removed on its own using a small round punch. | Small dot scars appear across the donor area, with no line. |
| Sapphire FUE | 0 | The clinic’s term for FUE using sapphire-tipped blades to make recipient cuts | As FUE |
| DHI | 3 | The clinic’s term for FUE using an implanter pen to place grafts | As FUE |
| FUT | 2 | A scalp strip is removed and divided into units under a microscope | A single linear scar, usually covered by hair above it |
| Robotic | 0 | FUE with a robot-guided punch | As FUE |
Crusts usually clear by day 7–10 with FUE, which leaves no linear donor scar (Front Med 2026 review). An average of 2,956 grafts per case was taken from the scalp in 820 advanced FUE cases (Chouhan 2019). A clinic is counted here only if its own site names the method.
Graft counts in published cases at each Norwood stage
On the Norwood scale, male hair loss runs from I (none) up to VII (a band only at the back and sides). Surgeons used these graft counts in two published case series, but they do not represent a quote for your scalp.
| Norwood stage | Grafts used | Men |
|---|---|---|
| II | 500–1,000 | 15 |
| III | 1,000–1,800 | 63 |
| IV | 1,500–3,300 | 67 |
| V | 1,500–4,000 | 13 |
From Wang et al., BMC Surgery 2024, table 2: 158 men treated with FUE.
| Stage V–VII, area covered | Average grafts | Men |
|---|---|---|
| Front only | 2,982 | 308 |
| Front and mid-scalp | 4,164 | 352 |
| Crown only | 2,770 | 24 |
| Full coverage | 6,237 | 100 |
Source: 820 men at stage V–VII, Chouhan et al., J Cutan Aesthet Surg 2019, table 2.
The stage by itself does not determine the graft count. In one study, two men graded Norwood 3V needed 3,900 and 6,150 grafts after their bald areas were measured (Pittella et al., 2024). Any quote offered before your scalp is measured is a guess.
Five points to settle before you book
- Find out who handles each part of the work: making the incisions, removing the grafts and setting them in place. Get the names, then look up each one in the national medical council’s public register.
- Request a written plan that lists the graft count, target zones and price for that number.
- Ask to see patients of that clinic at 12 months, under the same light and from the same angle. At six to nine months, most people see results, while some see them at 12 (AAD).
- Find out what happens with poor growth, including if a second session is covered and how long that coverage lasts.
- Price the whole first year: medicine, travel, the procedure, follow-up visits and time off work.
