FUE graft extraction from the donor area at the back of the scalp

Which methods are offered, and how many of the clinics here offer each

MethodClinicsHow grafts are takenDonor area afterwards
FUE6Follicular units are taken one at a time, using a small round punch.Across the donor area, small dot-shaped scars appear without creating a line.
Sapphire FUE0FUE under the clinic’s own name, using sapphire-tipped blades for the recipient cutsAs FUE
DHI0FUE under the clinic’s own name, with grafts placed by an implanter penAs FUE
FUT7A strip of scalp is removed, then cut into units under a microscopeA single linear scar, usually covered by hair above it
Robotic0FUE with a robot-guided punchAs FUE

Crusts clear by day 7–10 in most cases, and FUE leaves no linear scar on the donor area (Front Med 2026 review). Advanced FUE cases numbered 820, and the average scalp harvest came to 2,956 grafts per case (Chouhan 2019). A clinic counts here if its own site names the method.

Published graft counts by Norwood stage

Male hair loss is graded on the Norwood scale, from I (none) through VII (only a band remaining at the back and sides). Surgeons used these graft counts in actual cases from two published series. They do not represent a quote for your scalp.

The stage by itself does not set the number. After their bald areas were measured, two men classified as Norwood 3V in a study required 3,900 and 6,150 grafts (Pittella et al., 2024). A quote offered before your scalp is measured is a guess.

Five points to settle before you book

  1. Find out who handles each step, from the incisions to taking grafts and placing them. First get the names. Then check each one with your state medical board, or check all states at once on DocInfo.
  2. Request a written plan: the number of grafts, the zones covered, and what that number costs.
  3. Ask the clinic to show you its own patients at 12 months, using the same lighting and angle. Results show for most people at six to nine months, and for some at 12 (AAD).
  4. Ask what happens when growth is poor, including whether a second session is covered and until when.
  5. Add up what year one costs you: the procedure, travel, follow-up visits, time off work, and medicine.
