FUE graft extraction from the donor area at the back of the scalp

Methods, and how many clinics here offer each one

MethodClinicsHow grafts are takenDonor area afterwards
FUE4Each single follicular unit is taken out one at a time, using a small round punch. The donor area shows small dot scars spread across it, with no line.
Sapphire FUE0The clinic's own name for FUE, using sapphire-tipped blades to make the recipient cuts.As FUE
DHI0The clinic’s own term for FUE where grafts are placed with an implanter penAs FUE
FUT4A strip of scalp is removed, then cut into units while viewed under a microscope.A single linear scar, which hair above it usually hides.
Robotic1FUE with a robot-guided punchAs FUE

FUE leaves no linear scar in the donor area, and by day 7–10 the crusts usually clear (Front Med 2026 review). Across 820 advanced FUE cases, the average harvest from the scalp was 2,956 grafts for each case (Chouhan 2019). Only clinics whose own site names the method are counted here.

Norwood stage and the graft counts in published cases

On the Norwood scale, male hair loss is graded I (none) through VII (only a band left behind at the back and sides). These numbers come from graft counts surgeons really used in two published series. None of them is a quote for your scalp.

Stage by itself does not set the number. One study measured the bald area of two men at Norwood 3V, who then needed grafts of 3,900 and 6,150 (Pittella et al., 2024). Until your scalp is measured, any quote is a guess.

Before you book, settle these five points

  1. Ask which person handles each stage: making incisions, removing grafts, and placing them. Names first, then a check on your state medical board for each one. To cover every state at once, use DocInfo.
  2. Ask for a plan in writing: how many grafts, which zones, and what that number costs.
  3. Ask the clinic to show you its own patients at 12 months, using the same light and angle. Results show up for most people at six to nine months, and for some at 12 (AAD).
  4. If growth is poor, ask whether a second session is included and how long that offer lasts.
  5. Add up what year one costs you: the procedure, travel, time off work, medicine and follow-up visits.
