FUE graft extraction from the donor area at the back of the scalp

Methods and the number of local clinics offering each

MethodClinicsHow grafts are takenDonor area afterwards
FUE5With a small round punch, follicular units are taken one at a time.Rather than a line, the donor area has small dot scars spread across it.
Sapphire FUE0The clinic’s term for FUE that uses sapphire-tipped blades to make recipient cutsAs FUE
DHI0The clinic’s term for FUE that places grafts with an implanter penAs FUE
FUT4A strip of scalp removed and divided into units under a microscopeHair above it usually hides the linear scar.
Robotic1FUE with a robot-guided punchAs FUE

With FUE, crusts usually clear by day 7–10, and the donor area has no linear scar (Front Med 2026 review). Across 820 advanced FUE cases, scalp harvest averaged 2,956 grafts for each case (Chouhan 2019). These counts include only local clinics that name the method on their own site.

Published graft counts by Norwood stage

On the Norwood scale, male hair loss ranges from I (none) to VII, when only a band of hair remains along the back and sides. Two published series report the graft counts that surgeons actually used. These counts are not a quote for your scalp.

The stage by itself does not determine the graft count. In one study, two men rated Norwood 3V required graft counts of 3,900 and 6,150 after their bald areas were measured (Pittella et al., 2024). A quote offered before your scalp is measured is a guess.

Before you book, settle five points

  1. Ask who handles each step, including the incisions, graft removal, and graft placement. After getting the names, check each person on your state medical board, or check every state at once through DocInfo.
  2. Request a written plan that lists the graft count, target zones, and price for that count.
  3. Ask to see that clinic’s own patients at 12 months, under the same lighting and from the same angle. Most people see results after six to nine months, while some see them at 12 (AAD).
  4. Ask about poor growth, including whether a second session is included and how long that offer lasts.
  5. Work out the first-year cost of travel, time away from work, the procedure, medicine, and follow-up visits.
