FUE graft extraction from the donor area at the back of the scalp

Methods and how many local clinics offer each

MethodClinicsHow grafts are takenDonor area afterwards
FUE5A small round punch removes single follicular units one at a timeSmall dot scars are spread over the donor area, with no line.
Sapphire FUE0For FUE, the clinic’s own name refers to a technique using sapphire-tipped blades for recipient cutsAs FUE
DHI1This is the clinic’s own name for FUE when an implanter pen places the grafts. As FUE
FUT4Under a microscope, a removed strip of scalp is cut into unitsOne linear scar remains, usually hidden by hair above it
Robotic0FUE with a robot-guided punchAs FUE

After FUE, the donor area has no linear scar. By day 7–10, crusts usually clear (Front Med 2026 review). Across 820 advanced FUE cases, scalp harvest averaged 2,956 grafts for each case (Chouhan 2019). A clinic counts here when its own site names the method.

Graft counts in published cases by Norwood stage

On the Norwood scale, male hair loss is graded from I (none) to VII (only hair remaining as a band at the back and sides). Two published series show the graft counts that surgeons actually used, not a quote for your scalp.

The stage by itself does not set the number. Two men rated Norwood 3V in one study needed graft counts of 3,900 and 6,150 after their bald areas were measured (Pittella et al., 2024). Any quote offered before your scalp is measured is a guess.

Before you book, settle these five points

  1. Ask who handles each step, including making incisions, taking grafts and placing them. Collect each name. Check them on your state medical board, or check all states at once through DocInfo.
  2. Request a written plan. It should state the graft count, zones and price for that number.
  3. Ask the clinic to show you its own patients at 12 months, using the same lighting and angle. Six to nine months is when most people see results, but some see them at 12 (AAD).
  4. Ask what would happen if growth is poor, including if a second session is part of the plan and how long that inclusion lasts.
  5. Add up the first year’s full cost: the procedure, medicine, follow-up visits, time off work, and travel.
